Why Can't I Activate My License Key for Outline on Mac

In short: To activate your license key, you need to download the app from our website, not the App Store.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Our application is available from two sources: the App Store and our website. While both versions are identical, business customers can only activate their key licenses in the version downloaded from our website.

If you originally downloaded the app from the App Store, follow these steps for a smooth transition:

1. Ensure Your Notebooks Are Safely Stored:

  • Make sure your notebooks are stored either in the cloud or locally (e.g., in Documents or Desktop).
  • To verify this, open the app, click on the notebook icon, go to Properties, and check the Location.
  • If "Documents" (or any cloud) is listed, you’re good. Click on the folder icon next to it to confirm your notebook is in a secure location.

Important: Ensure your data isn't stored in the Outline Cache, User Guide, or Inbox, as these are not intended for long-term storage.

2. Uninstall the App Store Version:

  • Go to Finder > Applications and uninstall the app.

3. Download the Correct Version:

4. Install the App:

  • Move the downloaded application from Finder > Downloads to Applications.

5. Open Your Notebooks:

  • Launch the app and open your notebooks by clicking the "+ Open from..." button and selecting their original location.

6. Activate Your License Key:

  • Double-click the key-license file, or go to Outline > Settings > Subscription and enter the key. The app will activate automatically, and the trial days will disappear from the top left corner.

Following these steps will help you quickly get your note-taking process up and running.
